Salvias are perennials and offer a wealth of colour late in the growing season, with their upright spikes of jewel-toned flowers.
Most salvias thrive in a sheltered, sunny position in well-drained soil that retains some moisture.
Their nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Chris Skinner, Head Gardener, Hinton Ampner, Hampshire says:
We collected and grow many varieties of Salvia here at Hinton Ampner. They thrive in our south facing terraces and Walled Garden, with many of them overwintering outside. We use them as part of our bedding displays with ‘Amistad’ being a regular feature, but we have many other varieties that we love to use such as ‘Phyllis Fancy’ ‘Royal Bumble’ Our visitors really enjoy seeing the variety on offer here, and love their long flowering season. They are one of our most requested plant identifications in the garden.
Hinton Ampner, is an elegant country manor and the tranquil garden sits so harmoniously within the landscape that one cannot exist without the other. Beautifully manicured lawns lead the eye down avenues of sculptured topiary, past borders full of the heady scent of roses, to breathtaking views across the South Downs.
