'Rewilding' your lawn
Easy steps for a more rustic 'green' space where wildlife can thrive, your open green spaces can be more colourful but also for children to play.
1. Leaving a mow strip of longer grass allows for native wildflowers to flourish. We all have a little space to be able to sow a 'home meadow'. Don't forget planting early to flower species of crocus lifts our spirits and flowers when the grass is slow to grow.
2. Early flowering Dandelions & Daisies provide nectar for bees as well as a seed food source for finches. Leave your first cut a little later - your grass will recover from a late cut.
3. Instead of laying turf or choosing a standard green grass seed mix- why not sow a lawn meadow? This carefully blended non-invasive gras seed is carefully blended with native wildflowers.
4. Sow a green manure strip such as Red Clover this beautiful perennial is great for bees - has a wonderful honey fragrance when grown on mass and not only can you make nitrogen-rich compost, the flowers also make tea!
Green fingered tips!
1. Cutting grass and leaving clippings on the lawn recycles much needed nitrogen back to where it's needed - the grass! Most modern lawnmowers have a mulch setting or just leave the grass box off and cut the grass twice- in different directions - this will also have a mulching effect.
2. When raking moss from lawns don't forget to compost the moss along with grass clippings into compost.
3.Problems with leather jackets? Leave a plastic sheet, empty compost bag or hessian overnight, the grubs will surface- rake them up and feed them to the birds!
4. Mow often but not too short, too shorter cutting height weakens grass allowing weeds to grow.
5. Choose clover over dandelions & daisies when weeding: clover fixes nitrogen for which your grass needs!
