Dahlias grow best in warm, sunny, and sheltered locations with moist, well-drained soil. They can be planted in the ground or in containers. The tubers that grow beneath the ground are unharmed and can live to perform again year after year given a little care from you. Some lift dahlia tubers and store them over winter, then replant the following spring. Others in milder areas leave them in the ground.
Ashley Brent, Head Gardener, Greenway, Devon, National Trust says:
Dahlias form an integral part of the herbaceous planting at Greenway in Devon where Agatha Christie and her family spent many happy hours together. At Greenway, we grow these spectacular flowers to be enjoyed by visitors through late summer and into autumn, just as Agatha would have done in the 1950s.
