5th September 2022Now in stock in all Blue Diamond Garden Centres!
The Dicksonia Antarctica Tree Fern, also known as the Soft Tree Fern, is an amazing plant and one of the oldest in the world, native to Australia and New Zealand. With spectacular, large, evergreen fronds, up to 3 metres long, held on a stout fibrous trunk, tree ferns provide form and texture for your garden and create an exotic feel.
Where to grow a tree fern?
Tree Ferns are slow growing, reaching an ultimate height of 2-4m and look great either in a border or a container and are also ideal for smaller gardens or patios. They look fabulous underplanted with other ferns and shade tolerant plants such as hostas, astilbes and crocosmia.
Looking after your tree fern is easy!
Contrary to belief, tree ferns are very low maintenance. All ferns like a damp shady, sheltered spot, out of direct sunlight and tree ferns are no exception. It’s important to water your Tree Fern frequently, keeping both the crown and the trunk moist and they also benefit from the occasional feed. They grow well in the UK and will tolerate quite cold conditions. When the temperatures start to drop in October or November protect the fern from the cold and frost during winter by wrapping the crown with straw or horticultural fleece.
Sustainability
With the popularity of Tree Ferns increasing in the UK, sustainability is very important. At Blue Diamond all of our Dicksonia Antarctica are sourced under licence and come from sustainable areas and reputable growers. All our tree ferns have a grower’s label to prove authenticity.
